Generous Donation Allows PSFA To Purchase State of the Art Technology for BTHS
For Immediate Release
September 23, 2024
Thanks to a generous donation to the PSFA, BTHS has been able to enhance our students' hands-on learning experience by acquiring cutting-edge technology for our biology classrooms. Principal Bryant and the faculty, in consultation with the advisory board, identified several key pieces of advanced equipment that will provide our students with innovative experiences.
Real-Time PCR System: This tool allows for precise DNA amplification and quantification. With the Real-Time PCR System, students will be able to perform real-time polymerase chain reactions (PCR), a crucial technique in modern biology and chemistry. They will explore gene expression, identify mutations, and study genetic sequencing, giving them a solid foundation in molecular biology and genetics.
Portable Nanopore DNA or RNA Sequencing: The portable nanopore sequencing device offers real-time DNA and RNA sequencing capabilities. This equipment will enable students to explore the complexities of genomics through hands-on real-time sequencing, providing practical experience with techniques used in cutting-edge research and diagnostics.
DNA Quantifier: The DNA Quantifier accurately measures the concentrations of DNA, RNA, and proteins in a sample. With this tool, students can precisely quantify nucleic acids and proteins, which is a vital step in molecular biology experiments. It will be utilized alongside the DNA Sequencer mentioned above.
Gel Imaging System (Gel Doc System): The Gel Doc system is designed for imaging and analyzing gels after electrophoresis, a common technique for separating nucleic acids or proteins. This system will allow students to quickly visualize the results of their experiments. By learning how to analyze and interpret gel images, students will enhance their critical thinking and data analysis skills.
This equipment will be integrated into the Molecular and Agricultural Biology (MAB), IB Biology, forensics, microbiology, and genomics courses, as well as independent research projects. Dr. Jensen has shared that “This advanced technology will significantly enhance our biology courses by allowing students to visualize the bands of DNA, RNA, or proteins within gels, providing a clearer understanding of gel electrophoresis outcomes.” Linda Hand goes on to say “With the RT-PCR instrument we will be able to investigate real-world scenarios, such as testing genetically modified foods and performing forensic analysis. The DNA sequencers will allow our students to sequence a wide variety of samples, including microbes and plants, deepening their understanding of genomics and bioinformatics". We are grateful for the generous donation made in memory of James and Fran Beshada.
